Mad Library have been playing together on and off since Autumn 1999, originally as a 3-piece (Joe, Lee & Lewis). This line-up of drums, piano and saxophone, played a number of gigs in the area (see gigs page), and recorded the records ‘Mad Library’ and ‘Live at The Phoenix’.

Mad Library spent the Summer of 2002 recording new material with a new sound – and all 3 members playing a variety of instruments on the record, which eventually became ‘Fetch My Coat’. This was definitely a transitional period for the band, with the new sound, and now-standard Mad Library songs such as Big Kitty and Sounds Like Time, emerging. It was also quite a frustrating time, as with members playing different instruments it was impossible to perform live and difficult to develop and record the songs.

In April 2003, with Mad Library due to play their first gig at Exeter Cavern, the band decided they would do something different for the gig and play with a guitarist, with Lee shifting from piano to bass. After the guitarist pulled out at the last minute, keyboard player Dan (from local band, Still) was drafted in so Lee could remain on bass duties. This gig went brilliantly, and the band were so impressed with this new, fuller sound that Dan became a permanent member of the Library, forming the current line-up.

Since then, the band have gone from strength to strength with more gigs under their belt, including supporting Martin Grech, playing with members of ska-punkers Shooting Crayfish in a semi-improvised set at The Cavern and reaching the final of the venue's 'Singles Club' BOTB-type competition.

Over Easter 2004, Mad Library also performed 2 gigs with MC/ singer/ poet Dom Coyote which added a superb extra dimension and sounded incredibly fresh, modern and exciting, earning some fantastic feedback including 2 10/10 reviews from Punkemon who claimed ‘If this collaboration doesn’t become a permanent, or at least regular, feature it would be a crime against music’. Worry ye not, Mad Library & Dom Coyote will be working together again!

The band are currently promoting new self-recorded album ‘Let’s Play’ with gigs in the SouthWest (seen ‘Gigs’ page’) and plan to write and record some new material this Summer, as well as playing whenever people let them!
